If you want to turn an existing grassy area into a wildflower meadow, wild flower garden or wildflower seeds area, we can help with advice and expertise.
Old meadows provide a haven for wildlife, insects and many colourful wild flowers. In recent years over 95% of our wildflower meadows have disappeared. Although they can never be exactly recreated, colourful wild flower meadows can be grown from scratch.
Call us for a free consultation and we will provide a written quotation to prepare the soil, then supply and spread a wild flower seed mix that will be most suited to your soil, drainage and local climatic conditions. The secret is a low fertility soil. A fertile soil will just cause vigorous growth of a few grasses and 'weeds'. The best time to sow wildflower seed is in early autumn as many seeds need the cold winter months to break their in-built dormancy.
Without care and cutting, dead plants will build up in your wild flower seed
area, allowing bramble, thistles and scrub to take over. We recommend Wildflower
meadows are cut at least once a year, in autumn (late August to September) and
possibly Once in early spring (late March to early April) , each time with
cuttings removed. We can advise on care of your meadow seed area would be
pleased to carry out your wildflower area maintenance.
For a large area, we aslo recommend you contact your local Wildlife Trust, to understand the full implications, ecological impact and long-term commitment required in managing a wild flower meadow.
